Premiering to critical acclaim at the 2021 London Film Festival, Marcos Mereles\u2019 tongue-in-cheek, genre-defying first feature explores the egos and idiosyncrasies of a fashion shoot gone wrong. <\/span><\/h2>\n

An eccentric photographer (Sid Phoenix), his eager assistant (James Aroussi) and a jaded make-up artist (Rosie Steel) are waiting for a model (Isabelle Bonfrer) to arrive. They\u2019ve never used this London warehouse location before, but it\u2019s not like anything out of the ordinary. Yet when one of their number disappears overnight, events take a turn for the surreal. With stylish cinematography and strong performances from a cast of rising stars, All is Vanity<\/em> marks out writer-director Marcos Mereles as one to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Marcos:<\/span><\/p>\n

“All is Vanity <\/em>is a project where genre boundaries are blended, this allowed me to have certain freedom that otherwise wouldn\u2019t have worked if I would have relied on the elements of a specific genre. My approach was to look after the needs of the story, and this meant introducing narrative elements that lead to a structure that answered the plot points in the story and the character\u2019s intentions. By tying up together all the stages in the story, I made sure that the genre-transition (or mixture) would be more fluent, and this also gives a connection between all the elements in the somewhat surreal and unexpected world of the film.<\/span><\/p>\n

All is Vanity<\/em> was written to create a diverse range of responses from audiences. I aspire that, as a story where limits are not completely set, it would make people wonder about how far things can go for the characters, since it could be a larger universe that blends mystery, drama, suspense, fantasy, comedy, magic realism and much more.”<\/span><\/p>\n

About Marcos Mereles<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Award-winning filmmaker. Born in Argentina, based in London. His first feature film All Is Vanity <\/em>(UK, 2021) had its world premiere at the 65th BFI London Film Festival and will be released in UK cinemas in October 2022. His short films have been selected in more than 40 festivals around the world, such as Cleveland (\u2019FilmSlam Award\u2019 nominee), Nashville (\u2019Graveyard Shift Short Award\u2019 nominee), Fantasia, Imagine (\u2018Silver M\u00e9li\u00e8s Award\u2019 nominee), Manchester (\u2018Best Experimental\u2019 winner), Capri Hollywood (\u2019Capri Short Cut Award\u2019 nominee) and many others.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Sid Pheonix<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On screen he has appeared alongside Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant in Florence Foster Jenkins <\/em>(dir. Stephen Frears); Ben Foster and Jesse Plemons in The Program<\/em> (dir. Stephen Frears); and Alice Lowe, Laura Fraser and Nicholas Pinnock in Dark Encounter<\/em> (dir. Carl Strathie) He won a New York Film Award for his portrayal of World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon in The Burying Party<\/em>. He has appeared on stage in roles as varied as Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby<\/em>, Dionysus in The Bacchae,<\/em> and Puck in A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em> in London\u2019s West End. He is attached to several upcoming projects, including The Prayer Wheel<\/em> from Citadel Pictures, The Evil in Me<\/em> from Strathie Films, and Phonos 1 from Flamingo House<\/em>, and will next be seen in Cary Fukunaga\u2019s series Masters of the Air.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
